Is the Force Feminist? A Look Back at Women in Star Wars

The Last Jedi is almost here, and like so many people, we can’t wait to see the next part of Rey’s adventure! Of course, for some, the centering of Rey in The Force Awakens and then Jyn Erso in Rogue One represented a major disturbance in the Force; to them, the Star Wars saga was morphing into “feminist propaganda,” a clear tool of the dark side. So we decided to take a look back at the Star Wars films and look at just what kind of place women hold in them overall. (Well, we totally ignore the awful prequel films which contribute nothing to this conversation and shouldn’t exist, but all the Star Wars films other than those.) Is it true? Are the Star Wars films a bastion of feminism in the pop culture landscape? Join us as we search our feelings in this brand new episode of The FREQ Show!
